Learn where Ultima Chess VR will be available, including SteamVR and Meta Quest. Learn about future expansions to Pico and PSVR2.
At launch, Ultima Chess will be available on SteamVR and Meta Quest platforms. These platforms have a large chess community, making them ideal for a new experience.
Meta was already a major presence in the VR market as of October 2022, with the Meta Quest platform reportedly raking in around 6.37 million active monthly users. This makes it one of the best options for VR development.
For those looking for the best VR headset to play chess, Meta Quest 2 and 3 remain popular options. Out of the 2.64 million users on Steam VR (January 2025 data), more than half use Quest 2/3, showing how popular this platform is for VR gaming.
Steam is one of the best platforms for gamers, and its VR ecosystem supports a wide variety of games. With 2.64 million users on Steam VR (January 2025 data), more than half play on Quest 2/3, while Pico accounts for about 3% of users. Valve Index holds around 13%, which is a significant number as well. For chess enthusiasts, VR chess games are gaining popularity, and Ultima Chess on Steam will not only allow players to add to their collection but also offer spectacular chess matches.
Beyond Steam and Meta Quest, we are also planning to expand the game to Pico and PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2). Pico headsets are very similar to Meta Quest devices, especially when it comes to their development environments. This will allow for a shorter development cycle and faster porting if Ultima Chess VR is created for the Pico.As of February 2025, there are around 300 VR games available on the PSVR2. While the library of games on the platform is growing steadily, PSVR2's entry into the market comes with challenges in approval processes on the platform to gain access to their SDK.
Our ultimate goal is to bring Ultima Chess VR to a wide variety of players. Stay tuned for more updates.
