Sony PSVR2: A New Virtual Reality Experience

Sony PSVR2 is the newest VR headset from Sony, which came to replace the PSVR and was presented on February 23, 2023. Sony developed a new design, improved ergonomics, and enhanced eye-tracking technology.

PSVR2 Design and Capabilities

The headset weighs 600 grams, which is 40 grams more than the previous PSVR model, but based on reviews, its ergonomics and comfort are rated highly. PSVR2 is currently one of the most comfortable VR headsets on the market. Its adjustable head strap helps users quickly find a comfortable fit, and the soft band does not press on your head during long sessions. There is also a built-in fan inside that directs air from the headset’s interior to the sides, preventing it from overheating.

PSVR2 Sense Controllers

In the new Sense Controllers, Sony introduced features found in the DualSense—analog resistance and haptic feedback. Considering that the headset itself has forehead vibration, these controllers really provide an impressive experience, since all the games released on PlayStation VR2 use this combination of haptic vibration + forehead vibration. Overall, these controllers are comfortable, fit easily in your hands, and have an ergonomic design. However, it should be noted that they have a small battery capacity.

Optics and OLED Display PSVR2

If we compare the optics of PSVR2 with the previous generation PSVR, it is better in every aspect, even though it uses the same Fresnel lenses as the first version. Worth mentioning the small focal area: if multiple people use the headset, you will need to calibrate the eye tracking each time, which directly affects image focus. However, if you are the sole user, you will not even notice this. The headset has unique internals: two OLED panels with a 2000x2040 resolution each, featuring full 10-bit HDR color reproduction.

PSVR 2 Eye tracking

Currently, only five VR headsets on the market have eye-tracking technology, and PSVR2 is one of them, working flawlessly in this headset. Essentially, when you are in a menu, the option your pupil focuses on is the one selected, and in games, if you aim a weapon, you will hit exactly where you look.

This technology also enables Foveated Rendering—when the console only fully renders the area you are looking at, while peripheral areas remain out of focus. From a 2K resolution, that peripheral zone can drop to 720 or even lower. You will not notice this reduction in the headset.

Price and Conclusion

A recent price cut in early March 2025 made the PSVR2 even more attractive. In many cases, it is cheaper than some of its competitors, with a current price on Amazon of ~$360.  For gamers who already own a PS5, the Sony PSVR2 is a great way to dive into virtual reality. If you want to try VR, this headset is a great starting point.

Finally, the Sony PSVR2 is the most comfortable and ergonomic VR helmet on the market, with the best color reproduction and the latest technology, adding Foveated Rendering, which whitens the frame rate. Sense Controllers are one of the best VR controllers, combined with the helmet’s frontal vibration.
